Assistive Technology Resource Center


Assistive technology equipment and computer software are available forStudent Accessibility Services (SAS)ֱ in a wheelchair accessible environment on the Boca, Davie, and Jupiter campuses. To use the Boca Assistive Technology Resource Center (ATRC), SAS ֱ must first attend an ATRC Orientation. This orientation is designed to provide an overview of all assistive technology available. This gives the student the opportunity to participate in the process of determining which technology would be best suited for each individual special need. In addition, the orientation explains procedures and rules for working in the resource center.


Visual Impairment

JAWS for Windows

  • JAWS is a screen reader that allows blind and visually impaired individuals to read computer screen either with a text-to-speech output or with a Refreshable Braille display

  • Access any image on the screen that includes text with Convenient optical character recognition (OCR)

  • Shortcut functionality allowing for fast and easy screen navigation

  • Works with Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Firefox and other accessible platforms
Kurzweil 1000

  • Scan and read software that makes printed or electronic text accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired

  • Text-to-speech software that speak text aloud in a variety of natural-sounding voices that can be modified to individual preferences

  • Create audio files for listening to text anywhere

  • Kurzweil 1000 will search select Internet repositories such as Bookshare.org, NLS Web Braille, AccessWorld, Talking Newspaper Association of the United Kingdom, NFB Publications, and Wikipedia, and present you with your download choices
NVDA

  • NVDA allows blind and vision impaired people to access and interact with the Windows operating system.

  • Support for popular applications including web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, and office programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Automatic announcement of text under the mouse and optional audible indication of the mouse position.

  • Support for many refreshable braille displays, including input of Braille via braille displays that have a braille keyboard.

  • Ability to run entirely from a USB flash drive or other portable media without the need for installation.
GoodFeel Braille Music Translator

  • Blind musicians can review a braille score with optional verbal and musical cues and independently create print scores of their musical ideas
  • Users can convert print scores to braille music quickly, automatically and accurately

  • Users can create print and equivalent braille transcriptions for collaboration with sighted or blind teachers or other ֱ

  • Provides a friendly user interface to permit customization of braille music output
ZoomText Magnifier/Reader

  • ZoomText is a magnifier and a screen reader software that isdesigned for individuals with low vision.

  • Help individuals with early vision loss, computer vision syndrome (CVS), and visual impairments such as macular degeneration and glaucoma.

  • Allow users to choose which part of the screen they would like to be magnifie.d

  • Provides three different reading options - App Reader, Doc Reader, and Speak It.

  • Users can customized the settings to their preference.
SmartView Synergy CCTV

  • The smartview Synergy CCTV magnifier allows users with low vision and other vision loss such as retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration to magnify their text when reading a book, magazine, newspaper, etc.

  • A 23" LCD screen enhances the viewing of text and images

  • The XY table allows for smooth movement of the reading material

DaVinci Desktop Magnifier

  • The Orion TI-84 Plus Talking Graphing Calculator is an accessible scientific and graphing calculator. This is a modified TI-84 Plus, but includes an Orion unit on the top of the unit to provide accessible output of calculator functions via speech, tones, and vibration.

Picture In A Flash

  • PIAF is a machine that creates raised line drawings on special paper, called capsule or swell paper

  • Users can draw, print or photocopy pictures onto the swell paper and pass it through the PIAF. The heat of the PIAF causes the lines to swell and then the drawing can be read by touch

  • It is ideal for people who are blind and vision impaired

  • PIAF can be used to access graphical information in nearly all subject areas especially Math and Science

  • This equipment enables low vision or blind ֱ to record their own audio labels for a wide range of items at school, home, and work.

Hearing Impairment

UbiDuo

  • Otter AI is a speech recognition and text to speech program available in app and web-based versions.

  • This application provides ֱ a hands-free approach to notetaking.

  • Otter Ai audio records the lecture while at the same time creating a text transcript of the recording.

All SAS Assistive Technology Resource Centercomputers are equipped with software for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and include internet access to MyFAU, OASIS, and Blackboard. Questions regarding these applications are always welcomed. In addition, some equipment may be loaned based upon individual need and availability. Our Boca Staff, Stuart and Roland are available for training of ֱ on all campuses. They possess experience and knowledge in all areas of assistive technology as well as learning skills and study strategies.
